Every now and then, there comes along an artist who abandons all fear of being different, throws caution to the wind, and does what he or she wants. Carmine Davis, 19, is one of those artist. Smart, kind, witty, talented, and courageous this young artist has already impressed many in the industry when it comes to his business sense, talent, and endurance… but you couldn’t tell him that.  Humble, Davis goes by the mantra “I’m not trying to compete with anyone. I’m trying to compete with myself and carve out my own niche. I’m trying to be the best I CAN be,”.

Autograph” is Davis’s long awaited debut single, not including “Dual Sides” by Manni Feeq that he is featured on, and it’s a great first impression. The song has a pop, rock, dance feel and it finds Davis, usually singing his heart out, more in the pocket, (at some parts Davis resembles a rapper with his vocal approach), but the pop and rock influence is there and in full of affect. There are even influences of country music in the song.

All in all, “Autograph” is a perfect blend of pop, rock and dance with a hook so dirty (check the definition of “Autograph” in the Urban Dictionary) you can’t believe your repeating it.

Sex… And All The Above: Autograph seems to have a little sadness to it. Where do the lyrics come from?

CARMINE DAVIS: The lyrics, I think, come from a lot of peoples experience. It’s the average “boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl eats boys heart, guy’s still heartbroken” story. Although, it has two meanings, that’s definitely one of them.

SAATA: What’s the other meaning?

CD: It’s a little bit more sexual. Search “Autograph” in the Urban Dictionary, and you’ll get the idea.

SAATA: Wow…..

CD: I know, right!? Haha! But I’m not a pervert. It’s just something I thought was interesting! I have my own slang and words for everything! Me and my crew kinda created our own language! It’s all in good fun! Funny!

SAATA: Did you write “Autograph” yourself?

CD: I wrote all the lyrics and co-produced the song with DJ Don Julio. He KILLED the track! I think it’s a great start! My next single will probably be “Whipped”, and I think it’s gonna take my music to the next level.

Interview with CARMINE DAVIS for SAATASAATA: What’s the meanest thing anyone has said to you in this industry?

CD: Gosh! Haha! I’m in an industry where everyone has something to say! Whether it’s “You’re a black guy! You shouldn’t be doing pop/rock/dance music!” or “You’ll never last” and things like that! But honestly, although I get a little down for like a split-second, it never stops me from doing my own thing! I plan to be an icon, and you don’t become an icon playing shit safe! You gotta break a few eggs and get messy!

SAATA: When hard times come, what and who keeps you going?

CD: My faith! God has blessed me with amazing friends in my life that have shown me that I CAN’T stop, because music is my heart! If I stopped, my heart might as well stop beating… So they don’t let me stop. Music is an amazing healer! I listen to music all day and I have this “Survivor” playlist that has an array songs that lifts me up.

SAATA: Describe your sound.

CD: It’s really whatever I feel. Right now, for this album, I wanna dance! I want to celebrate and make people feel good and party! So right now I’m in the dance/pop/rock genre. But, who knows! Later on I’ll infuse R&B/Soul or Hip-Hop, Jazz, Reggae, Country, Folk…. All of the genres that inspire me! I like to believe music lives in my soul, and there’s no defining your soul.

SAATA: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?:

CD: I’ve been kicked out of a mall, before. I was teaching my friends how to stage slap, like a true theatre nerd, and I guess we did it so good that they thought we were SERIOUSLY slapping each other! Haha! This mall cop on his segway followed us from the top floor until we went down the escalator, and then he called the other mall cop downstairs by the escalator! They were on their walkie-talkies like we were terrorist or something! Hahaha! I was so embarrassed!

SAATA: Are you in a relationship?

CD: Yes. My music and I are going pretty steady, right now.

SAATA: What kind of girls are you attracted to?

CD: Beautiful girls, inside and out. I like a girl who’s comfortable with herself. No one who’s extremely insecure. But, truth be told, most of my relationships have been with women who were… Well… Bad… Haha! Not Michael Jackson ‘Bad’ but Sharon Stone “Basic Instincts” ‘Bad’.

SAATA: So, you’re attracted to bad girls!?

CD: I’m guessing. When you hear my song “Autograph”, the protagonist is talking about a woman who portrays herself to be so sincere and really has ulterior motives. Maybe she just wants attention? Maybe money? Maybe to play games or just wants sex? Who knows? But whatever she wants, she can get ‘cause “she rocked the shit out my ‘guitar’”. That’s a little bit about like my life. I wouldn’t say it’s that extreme, but those lyrics do come from a place of pain and experience.

SAATA: So, the lyrics to ‘Autograph’ come from your own broken-heart?

CD: Yes and No. Maybe on the remix album, or maybe I’ll record it live while I’m on tour this summer, but I’d love to strip it down. Take away the dance beat and place a piano and/or violin, slow it down and I think it would definitely show the emotion, besides the sexual ones, in a better light.

SAATA: What’s One Word That Describes You?

CD: “Resilient”

SAATA: Finish this sentence: “Given the chance, I could _____ all night

CD: “Given the chance, I could DANCE all night.”

SAATA: What city are you looking forward to visiting on your summer tour?

CD: I’ve been to L.A. briefly, so I can’t wait to go to NY!

SAATA: Any Future Plans?:

CD: “Autograph” will be available on iTunes and other digital download stores, shortly! My remix album, “Autograph: The Remixes” should be out the end of the month. My 2nd and 3rd single will be released in June. I also start my tour late June! I can’t wait to show my ass and rock out with my cock out… Or in… Depends how the night goes…
